UCSF: Chemical Engineering

Summary: Working with UCSF I produced an animated video to describe their latest breakthrough in chemical engineering medicine. I was the lone animator who worked alongside a director and sound designer. The project was a mixture of 2D and 3D elements, using a 2D approach for when the viewer is inside the body and using 3D when outside the body.

Process: Evolve Media reached out to me to help produce an animated video for UCSF/UC Berkeley around a novel cancer treatment. The animation would be used mainly to educate stakeholders who would finance the project. Excited by the potential of a game-changer in cancer treatment, I was all in. I worked alongside Evolve's Executive Producer--and in close contact with UCSF/UC Berkeley--we formed a script, storyboards, styleframes, animatics, and after rounds of drafts we were able to deliver a video that UCSF was proud of.

Design Language: We knew we wanted to separate the internal human body world from the outside world. The video starts out in a 3D world in a laboratory but a quick zoom into a human body reveals an alive 2D world. When we zoom out of the cell we are back in the 3D world with the petri dish as the main focus. Narration guides the viewer and paces the animation (we made both an English and Mandarin version). The color palette in the outside world was bright and colorful while the world inside the human body was of a darker palette to really bring attention to the bright hero cell--a cell whose journey involves being taken out from the body and once reprogrammed is reinserted back into the body to then work its magic. The entire cellular engineering process was magic to us, and we wanted to convey a spark of it.
